Winona Ryder (born Winona Laura Hornowitz) was born in Winona Minnesota. The parents of Winona Ryder named her for her hometown. Michel Horowitz was her father as well as Cynthia Palmer, his mother, were both authors and editors. Ryder, who considers herself Jewish has a connection to Ryder's Jewish father. Her half-siblings are younger, Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder along with her whole family relocated to Mendocino County in California in the year 2000, when Ryder was only seven years old. There was no electricity. Ryder was a voracious bookworm and would spend her days studying books since she had no television. Ryder began taking acting classes when Ryder was 12, in the American Conservatory Theatre. She landed her debut role on the big screen in 1986, when she was 15 years old.
